This past Tuesday, the Waves tennis team made a 2-hour trek to South Pontotoc for the 3A Individual District Tournament. Teams from Louisville, Nettleton, South Pontotoc, and Winona were all in attendance and submitted their individual teams in the events of Boys’ Doubles, Girls’ Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Girl’s Singles, and Boy’s Singles. These teams then in turn played each other for a spot at the State Tournament in each of these events.

In Boys’ Doubles, Ross Berry and Meilun Zhou beat the Louisville and Winona teams to earn first seat in District and can now move on to State. Senior Ross Berry said, “I’m really proud of the way me and my partner[Zhou] played, as well as the rest of the team. We have worked hard all season and I’m really glad to see so many people qualify for State this year. I am also definitely looking forward to competing at the next level.”

In Girls’ Doubles, Michelle Li and Aylin Memili beat the Winona team but lost to the South Pontotoc and earned second seat in District and can also move on to State. Junior Aylin Memili said, “I am ecstatic for our team’s advancement to the state championship! We all worked very hard to get to this position, and I how that we will represent MSMS well in a few weeks at State.”

In Boys’ Singles, Cullen McDonough smashed as usual and earned first seat in District and is moving on to State.

In Girls’ Singles, Eliza Barrow beat the Nettleton player and lost to the player from Winona. She earned second seat in District and will also be moving on to State.

We are all very proud of our Waves tennis team for their exemplary performance at the District Tournament and we wish them luck at State!

Great End to a Great Season for MSMS Tennis Team

While most kids are going to the movies, or the mall, or partying on a Friday evening, the MSMS Waves tennis team travelled all the way to Corinth, Mississippi to play against Alcorn Central in the 3rd round of State playoffs.

Junior Meilun Zhou said, “We were all super pumped to make it to the third round, but we weren’t sure what to expect. We knew they would be better than anyone else we’d played before.”

And sure enough, the competition was tough. Cullen McDonough lost his first match of the season in Boys Singles, starting the entire evening on a sour note. But Eliza Barrow lifted the team’s spirit by winning her match in Girls Singles. Following her optimistic performance, the team lost two more matches in Boys Doubles #2 and Girls Doubles #2. Although, the team fought hard, they ended up losing the match as a whole.

“Even though we lost, I’ve never been more proud of my team. "We fought hard and we went down swinging,” said Senior Ross Berry passionately.

Coach Janie Shields said, “This was my first year coaching, and this team really made my job so easy. They all knew how to play and at practice they’d just get out there and hit. I never had to say anything. They knew where they wanted to be and they knew exactly what they needed to do to get there. Even though we weren’t able to make it to state, I’m still extremely proud of our MSMS tennis team!”

Overall, the season was successful, not to mention that this was the first time in MSMS history that the Waves tennis team made it past the 2nd round of playoffs. Go Waves and better luck next year!
